artofmomcation

So, I have a little secret.  Shhhh..lean in close. Listen, I hope you don’t judge, but the last few years I found the KEY to being a way better mom and it isn’t at all what you think.  It isn’t  found in working harder at it or reading more parenting books like when my olders were all little.  There isn’t even a formula.  No, it is TOTALLY unconventional and may I say it would fly in the face of  those who have to have perfect attendance at every SINGLE event and nose wiping of their child in order to be “mom of the year” amongst their peers and at their childrens school activities.  I may be a work from home momprenueur of a homeschool family but I have figured out after almost sixteen years of motherhood that I HAVE to have a touch of alone time in order to recharge and be nice.  I’m not the only one who believes firmly in this practice, so do my kids and so does my rock star stay at home homeschool dadprenuer hubster.  EVERYONE concurs that when mama comes home from a trip slap happy, everyone is happy.  Hey, I LOVE taking my children along on business trips and vacations.  We do it often.  But there are times where a few days alone is JUST what the Dr ordered and I will gladly concede, my own kombucha supply in tow and all.

It doesn’t have to be a five star vacation.  Often times it could just be one to two nights at a local hotel, though there is nothing like sitting on the beach with a new book in hand and only the sound of seagulls, the waves and someone else’s kids in the distance.  I slightly smile to myself thinking about the vegan chocolate organic pie I will have in bed after a long hot soak in an epsom bath later that night, again with book in hand.

Yes, my friends there IS a need for a momcation even if you have to send your family out the door and lock yourself up in your bedroom with all the necessary supplies and the occasional texts to “bring food”.  I warn you if you try to do a stay at home momcation you must do yourself a solid(favor) and refuse to clean or organize your closet and drawers.  This is time for you to read, listen, press in, relax, and recharge. This is time to get refueled so you can go back out that door and not yell at someone for spilling the milk or not flushing the toilet (again).

I may LOVE being a mom of four here at the homestead but I HAVE to have some time of rest away from all the goings on and the business.  Recently I made the choice to stay a couple of extra nights at the beach after our family vacation.  Because I have done this sort of thing before I wasn’t at all worried or hesitant about it.  I slipped my mom hat off and enjoyed every moment of my free time with only feeling guilty once when finding out my family got stuck on an unplanned layover overnight due to weather.  I had just a smidgen of guilt but it quickly passed.  My amazing hubby had the patience of Job and took it like a champ, garnering the last room to himself at a nearby hotel and bedded everyone down for about five hours of sleep before waking to do it ALL over again the next morning.

So what kind of supplies would one need for this momcation? Here are just a few ideas.  If you have a favorite treat, fruit, snack or drink, go ahead and pack you a mini cooler.  Do you journal? Bring your journal and pens/pencil.  Do you color? Bring your coloring book and colored pencils/markers.  Reading is a MUST.   How about a new book or better yet the kindle app with SEVERAL new books you can binge on? Just make sure it is building you up and is positive!! You may want to take your exercise clothes and go for a walk or run.  After an amazing epsom bath there is nothing like getting into some cozy jammies and staying in for the night. With my Young Living oils in the diffuser, and a Bible study in hand, I’m good to go until the next day!

What kinds of things should you not take with you? WORK! I repeat do not take work with you! You will be frustrated afterwards for taking the time away and not getting recharged.  If you have a family member or friend you minister to that you need to rest and recharge from, that is ok and necessary  at times. Just make sure that you let them know you are going to be “largely offline.”  This helps them understand your need to set your phone aside.

If you don’t have a hubby to bless you with this, consider praying for someone to step up and give you a reprieve.  Maybe ask a sibling or parent if for mothers day they would give you the gift of a rest sometime in the near future?

Have an epic Mother’s day!!!!!! Don’t forget to practice the art of momcation!!!!!!

LemonSugarScrub

This Mother’s Day, we salute the hands of busy moms all over!  Learn how you can quickly whip up your very own sugar scrub with just a few ingredients and Young Living’s lemon essential oil.  We know time is of the essence! That’s why we work for and with moms on their path of wellness, purpose, and abundance.

Lemon Sugar Scrub

2.5 c white granulated sugar

1 c extra virgin olive oil

2 T lemon juice

20 drops Young Living lemon essential oil

*Optional-YL Citrus Fresh essential oil (use 10 drops each if you use both oils for the recipe.)

Mix together sugar and olive oil. Add in lemon juice and YL lemon oil and stir until gritty paste.  This will keep a while in mason jars with lids and smells amazing.  The olive oil makes it look even more “lemony”.  Yep, it’s a word.

*Citrus Fresh and Lemon essential oils both have the natural ability to make your skin more sensitive to direct sun for up to 8 hours after using. Please use with caution so your hands stay happy.:)

Judy Mustian - For the lemon sugar scrub recipe, how many small mason jars would it fill? I’m thinking about the smallest (jelly size) jars. It’s a super easy recipe. I can’t wait to make some!ReplyCancel

Burchfield - It depends what size you are using. If you use the small half pints, probably 6.ReplyCancel

got static

There’s nothing like traveling down the road with your favorite song playing, singing along with the window rolled down at the top of your lungs. Until that is, the static takes away the moment.  Life’s a lot like that.  We are traveling down the road in the sunshine, the wind whipping in our hair, and then BAM, out of nowhere, we are blindsided.  It reminds me of the time I was a senior in high school preparing for a trip and in a part of town I had never driven in before. One minute I am driving and singing along to “I can see clearly now the rain is gone.  I can see all obstacles in my way..gone are the dark clouds that had me blind, It’s gonna be a bright, bright sunshiny day.”  It had just rained a lot and I was looking at a huge pot hole.  I totally missed the stop sign for looking at the pot hole.  What happened in the next three seconds could have killed me.  Have you seen the HUGE monster Broncos from back in the day? I sailed right through the intersection and out of the corner of my eye and too late to do a thing about it, was a flash of red.  The next thing I know my tiny little Escort was airborne and landed on its side facing the opposite direction.  Suddenly the song was mocking me.  “Look straight ahead there’s nothing but blue skies.”  Just like that my car was totaled, I was being pulled out through the trunk of my car and in an ambulance heading for the E.R.  They couldn’t believe I didn’t have a scratch or bruise on my body.  Only the worst headache of my life and constant flashbacks.  Evidently, a local newspaper photographer snapped the shot of my car on its side and I was featured in the newspaper for all to see my first wreck, and to add insult to injury, it was posted in the “On the Side” column.  Yep, I was the butt of a joke in a small, small town for all to see at age 17.  Fun times.   But that’s how tests and trials hit us right? Straight up out of the blue, no time to brace.  Thankfully Escorts have automatic seat belts.  Thankfully, because I am pretty sure that back then I wasn’t as cautious as I have been in my adult life with always wearing a seat belt.

But back to the radio.  That day my signal was coming in loud and clear.  I had no idea it was about to be interrupted.  How often are we tuned in with a strong, clear signal and static starts up and we are across the room or in the car and let is sit on the static for just a bit to see if it will get clear again? We just sit and wait and expect that it will.  But rarely does it without us reaching over and turning the dial to a new station.  We may be passing through somewhere and lose the station all together.  It is up to us to stop what we are doing and tune in.  WE are the ones moving around.  HE is always steady, always constant.  The problem isn’t the producer, it’s the receiver.  It’s up to us to go before the Lord when we aren’t hearing clearly and ask Him to show us.  It’s up to us to carve out the time and clear our calendars of additional static and noise so we can devote time to hearing from Him daily instead of just continuing to plow through our busy lives until we are interrupted with a blindsiding blow?  I often wonder how people can expect to hear clearly if  they aren’t taking the time to spend with their Savior and Lord daily but yet are giving out of themselves to others at home, church, work and in the community.  There’s so much static they don’t even hear it any more.

I believe Father is asking us in these days to reduce the static in certain areas of our life so we can hear clearly from Him.  He wants us to tune in and turn up.

That day I ended up hanging in my seat belt with my car on its side.  I was spared, but shaken.  It definitely got my attention.  It’s much easier to pay attention then to be blindsided.

Got static? Time to turn the knob.  He’s faithful and steady and will always be there.

Jim Bob Haggerton - ALL THE YESSSS!!!! I too had a major car accident the summer of my senior year…I fell asleep at the wheel with my car set at 78 mph on cruise and ran off the road. It was a turning point in my life. Love this. So well written and so true. The Father is speaking so quietly, but OUR static gets in the way. Thanks for the reminder!!ReplyCancel

Kathy - I remember that day very well. God was with you!! Remember, Mom and Dad were already at the hospital so they were waiting on you when the ambulance brought you in!

This is a great post and reminder to listen to the only one who is always there for us!!ReplyCancel
